Friday 16 October - Talks & Tech Fest
We welcomed speakers, exhibitors, accompanying staff and visiting schools to take part in the final day of The Turing STEM Conference.
We were delighted to host Years 12 and 13 pupils and staff from The Gryphon, Shaftesbury, Sherborne Boys, Sherborne Girls, Yeovil College and Leweston for a day of expert debate, inspiring talks and hands-on technology, all inspired by Alan Turing's legacy.
A Grand Finale: Tech Fest Brings STEM to Life...
Friday marked the largest day of the conference week, with more than 1,000 local pupils taking part. The afternoon saw the launch of the Tech Fest, which opened its doors to parents and other pupils, offering an exciting opportunity to explore the latest developments in science and technology.
With interactive exhibits, hands-on demonstrations, and the chance to engage with leading organisations in the industry, the event brought innovation to life and provided a fitting finale to an inspiring week of STEM discovery.
"This morning’s conference was both extremely intriguing and thought provoking. The panel was filled with professionals from a range of backgrounds. They provided a detailed analysis of the uses and abuses of AI, particularly focusing on how AI is impacting young people's lives. "
Arabella, Student
“It has been a privilege to host the culmination of the Turing Conference and welcome so many young people from neighbouring schools. Turing’s legacy reminds us of the importance of curiosity, courage and independent thinking. Seeing students engage so enthusiastically with ideas that will shape their futures has been truly inspiring.”
Dr Ruth Sullivan, Head of Sherborne Girls
“Celebrating Alan Turing here in Sherborne, with a pupil-focused conference, supported by so many brilliant industry minds, has been truly inspirational. It has reconfirmed the need for greater entrepreneurial support in the Southwest. I’m already looking forward to the next phase of the Turing Project, with plans to create a Turing Centre for all, here in Sherborne, by 2030.”
Sir Christopher Colville, Air Marshal
"The world is changing fast. Today's Turing Conference at Sherborne took the hopes, concerns and challenges of a hundreds of young people and hosted an honest, mature, wide-ranging conversation with the UKs leaders in AI. The result? A fantastic conversation and new connections, and ultimately a reminder that what we each decide to do is what really matters."
