Catch the Sun - Art Exhibtion
Pupils’ artwork on display at Catch the Sun – an Art Exhibition at the Corn Exchange, Dorchester
Sherborne Prep is delighted and proud that five pupils’ sun-inspired artwork have been selected to be part of the ‘Catch the Sun’ Art Exhibition at the Corn Exchange in Dorchester, from Tues 24 March to Sat 11 April. The exhibition coincides with Helios, a new touring artwork by artist Luke Jerram.
Measuring seven metres in diameter, Jerram’s artwork features 72dpi detailed imagery of the Sun’s surface – at an approximate scale of 1:200 million, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical artwork represents 2000km of the Sun’s surface. The installation is a fusion of solar imagery, sunlight and a specially created surround sound composition by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson.
Fernando Velazquez, Head of Art, writes “Art plays a crucial role in our troubled society, helping communities to survive and grow. In times of conflict, uncertainty, and division, art promotes beauty, offering moments of reflection and hope to restore a sense of possibility. Perhaps most importantly, art fosters tolerance and empathy, decorating our walls whilst cultivating openness, dignity and respect. I would encourage everybody to go and see the wonderful installation by Jerram this coming Easter holidays, alongside our pupils’ artwork, and that of professional artists and children from all over Dorset.”
Sherborne Prep’s budding artists are not resting on their laurels – as Fernando writes, “We are also submitting work for the Royal Academy Young Artists exhibition and the Satips National Art Exhibitions. This month we have visited Kingston Lacy and this week we are off to Houser and Wirth for a visit and a workshop!”
Congratulations to Laura P, Valya C, Gwen D and Ella N whose artwork was selected for this exhibition.
